UNA Europa: a second workshop on the heritage of European universities
On 7th December, a workshop on the heritage of European universities was held at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.
Following the first workshop last November at KU Leuven on the theme of “Responsibilities and potentialities”, Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne organised a second workshop that took place on 7th December at the Centre Panthéon. The workshop’s theme – “Heritage of European universities: a tourism resource for European cities” – was designed to explore the interplays between heritage and its geographical backdrops, considering the role of heritage as resource for society, as well as local and international visitors.
Discussions involved experts from the five other UNA Europa universities (Freie Universität Berlin, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, Uniwersytet Jagielloński w Krakowie, KU Leuven, Universidad Complutense de Madrid), including specialists within various fields: architects, tourism specialists, urban designers, historians, art historians, geographers, economists, lawyers, sociologists and anthropologists. Cultural heritage is one of UNA Europa’s three priority themes, alongside European studies and sustainability.
Two round tables were organised on “A heritage to share: how to develop a common identity for students and staff thanks to heritage?” and “Heritage as a tourism resource”. Master’s level students at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne’s IREST (Institut de Recherche et d'Études Supérieures du Tourisme) also had the opportunity to attend the workshop’s sessions.
This day was also the occasion to discuss the prefiguration of the Association of Universities for the creation of a Cultural Route of European Heritage Universities (EuHU) with a representative of the European Institute of Cultural Routes (Council of Europe).
