Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne strengthens its academic ties with Brazilian partners

From 19th to 23rd April, a delegation from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University went to São Paulo and Belo Horizonte, Brazil, to reinforce its academic collaboration with several Brazilian higher education and research partners.

The delegation was first received in São Paulo by Yves Teissier d'Orfeuil, Consul General of France, who, surrounded by his team and the representative of the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), Dr Fernando Menezes, gave an overview of higher education and research in Brazil, and outlined the objectives of the cross cultural France-Brazil season which will take place in both countries in 2025.

At the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil's largest university and a partner of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne for over 20 years, the delegation was welcomed by the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation, Dr Paulo Nussenzveig, the Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Administration, Accounting and Actuarial Studies, Dr Maria Dolores Montoya Diaz, and the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr Celso Fernandes Campilongo. Various projects were addressed, including the creation of joint or double degrees in these subject areas, as well as the launch of a cross-disciplinary programme enabling several departments from the two institutions to work together on a given theme, such as democracy.

The members of the delegation from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University also had the opportunity to take part in the activities organised during the FAUBAI conference, which is considered to be the largest and oldest conference dedicated to the internationalisation of higher education in Latin America. Pr Christine Neau-Leduc, President of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University, contributed to a workshop on "Transitions: new realities, new challenges, new tools for cooperation between France and Brazil", organised on the sidelines of the FAUBAI conference by the French Embassy in Brazil and Campus France.

The delegation then headed to Belo Horizonte to meet their counterparts from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), with which Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne has been a partner since 2007. Pr Christine Neau-Leduc and Pr Sandra Regina Goulart Almeida, Rector of the UFMG, discussed the objectives of the existing cooperation agreement between the two institutions, as well as potential themes for further cooperation such as sustainable development, democracy and artificial intelligence. The meeting between the Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne delegation, the international relations department and the faculty of law of the UFMG also provided an opportunity to explore the possibility of organising two conferences, first in France and then in Brazil, as part of the France-Brazil Season in 2025.
